Virgil Clyde Bump, beloved father, grandpa, Papa and brother
CUBA — Virgil C. Bump, 86, of Beebe Hill Road, Cuba, passed away Saturday (Jan. 24, 2026) at home, surrounded by his family.
Born Jan. 11, 1940, in Cuba, he was the son of Norman and Kathryn Landrich Bump. On Oct. 27, 1962, in Olean, he married the love of his life, Shirley C. Learn, who predeceased him June 1, 2010. They are forever reunited.
He was a graduate of Cuba Central School.
After high school he worked as a custodian at the school. He later was a self-employed contractor building and remodeling homes in the area, including the homes he and Shirley raised their children in. He also owned and operated his own Christmas tree farm and maple syrup business.
When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed camping, hunting, drive-in movies, dirt track racing and going to Holland Speedway. Later, simply talking with his children and grandchildren brought him the most joy.
He is survived and greatly missed by his children, Richard Bump, Randall (Colleen) Bump, Rodney Bump and Susan (Patrick) Herrick, all of Cuba; his grandchildren, Rachelle, Chase, Calsey, Breanna, Justice, Alyssa, Caileigh and Cole; a great-granddaughter, Chloe Elizabeth; three sisters, Barbara Jean Powell of Hammondsport, Mary Jane Klopp of Williamsville and Shirley Morgan of Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by a brother, James Leon Bump.
Per his wishes, a private family memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
