He was born in Olean on April 23, 1944, the son of Gertrude and Howard Burton. Richard shared an extraordinary 63 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Janet Burton. Their enduring partnership was a testament to loyalty, commitment and unwavering love. Together, they built a family rooted in strength, compassion and care.

Richard served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy, including service during the Vietnam War. His time in uniform reflected his strong sense of duty, courage and quiet patriotism — values he carried with him throughout his life.

Outside of work, Richard found joy in his passions for golf and bowling, activities that brought him both relaxation and friendly competition. He also enjoyed watching television, playing cards and spending time on online computer games. A passionate NASCAR fan and loyal San Diego Chargers supporter, Richard faithfully cheered on his teams, embracing the excitement and tradition of the sports he loved.

Richard is survived by his loving wife, Janet; his three daughters, to whom he was devoted and so proud of, Linda Ashbrook, Dianna Hollamby and Denise Werner; his greatest joy was being a loving and proud grandfather of nine grandchildren, Stacy (Brian) Kunselman, Angela (Anthony Aloyya) Barth, Crystal Witter, Jennifer (Paul Smith) Hoak, Ashley (Eddie) Adams, Alisha (Karl) Hackett, Jessica (Murcial) Estrella, Melissa (Cliff Stermer) Ashbrook and Justin (Nicole) Cowell; 32 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; his sister, Eunice Sandrick; a brother, Wade Burton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Gertrude and Howard; and three brothers, Leroy, Paul and Russell Burton.

Richard will be remembered for his quiet strength, kind heart and steadfast devotion to those he loved. His legacy lives on through his family, the values he instilled, and the countless lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

A Celebration of Richard’s Life will be held Saturday, April 25, 2026, at a time and place to be announced.
