Duane ‘Wayne’ Simmons

OLEAN — Duane “Wayne” Simmons, 91, passed away Tuesday (Jan. 13, 2025) at Absolute Care of Allegany. Duane is now in the arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ.

Wayne was born May 17, 1934, in Portville, the son of Ella Violetta and Albert Simmons.

He graduated from Portville High School and was employed at all of the original Olean movie theaters. This experience sparked a lifelong love of Hollywood and film history. Wayne possessed an incredible knowledge of classic movies and maintained a vast collection of old Hollywood memorabilia. He had a unique ability to turn any conversation into a story reminiscent of a classic movie script.

Wayne also worked at the Olean House Coffee Shop, Olean Wholesale and the St. Bonaventure University Dining Hall.

He was a member of the former Christopher Columbus Lodge and was a familiar face at early morning breakfasts at the 6th Street Diner in Olean. He especially enjoyed coffee outings at Tim Hortons.

Wayne had a friend, his beloved cat, Clarence.

He is survived by his cousin, Joan Shores of Texas. Wayne also leaves behind his devoted friends, Stephen Yehl and Janie Pitcher, both of Allegany; as well as his friend, David Ouderkirk, who often stopped by to visit and bring him coffee.

Wayne was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Arnold.

At Wayne’s request, there will be no funeral service. Burial will take place in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

Donations may be made to the Cattaraugus County SPCA, 2944 Route 16, Olean, NY 14760, in honor of Duane Simmons and his cat, Clarence.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Casey, Halwig and Hartle Funeral Home, Olean.

Steve and Janie would like to extend their sincere thanks to everyone at Absolute Care for the kindness, care and respect shown to Wayne during his stay.
