Katherine E. ‘Kay’ Kautz

ROCHESTER — After a remarkable 101 years of being deeply loved, and just two days shy of her 102nd birthday, Kay Kautz passed away peacefully on Wednesday (Jan. 7, 2026). She is now reunited with her beloved husband W. Oscar, and her son David, both who preceded her in death.

Kay was born Jan. 9, 1924, in Bradford, Pa., and was the daughter of Joseph and Anna Melinchak Ogurchak. On Dec. 2, 1946, in Bradford, she married Walter “Oscar” Kautz, who predeceased her May 5, 1993.

Kay lived a full and vibrant life centered on love, faith and family. She was a devoted wife and mother whose many interests included baking, sewing, gardening, fishing, bridge and round dancing — a recreation she joyfully shared with Oscar as they traveled, danced and taught others together.

Kay excelled at her favorite passion, which was crafting (stained glass, cards, jewelry, ceramics, watercolor, florals). Her energy and independence were remarkable; she attended the YMCA daily until age 96 and continued mowing her lawn until age 97!

Kay’s faith guided her life and served as a lasting example of kindness, integrity and compassion.

Kay is survived by her daughters, Diane Kannel, Carol (Roy Luna) Kautz, Susan Mark and Anna Potter; and her grandchildren, Donna Post, Cora Mayo, Joseph Kannel, Douglas (Rachael) Potter and Emily (Jordan) Brock; her great-grandchildren, Brennan Mayo, Grayson, Breck and Rylan Potter; niece, Margaret Shavalier; and nephew, Daniel Shavalier.

Family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 13, 2026) at The Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, 646 E. State St., Olean. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels Church, 202 S. Union St., Olean. Interment will follow in Allegany cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Friendly Home Music Program — a program Kay loved, at 3156 East Ave., Rochester, NY 14618.
