HS WRAP: Local runners shine at Southern Tier XC Classic
A-L’s Wilczewski takes 3rd; Higgins 5th for Gator girls
ALLEGANY — Allegany-Limestone hosted the annual Southern Tier Cross Country Classic over the weekend.
This year’s event, held on a beautiful autumn Saturday morning at Allegany-Limestone Central School, featured 18 teams and several individual runners from all over the region, including Cattaraugus County, Erie County and Pennsylvania.
And, as in most years, several local runners fared well.
On the boys’ side, the Big 30 occupied two of the top three spots, three of the top five and the No. 7 runner in a field of 119 finishers. West Valley’s Noah Klahn placed second overall, running the 3.1-mile layout in 16:05.64, while Allegany-Limestone’s Nolan Wilczewski claimed third in 16:25.11. Cuba-Rushford, meanwhile, boasted the Nos. 5 and 7 finishers in Joe Wojciechowski (16:49.64) and Alex Linn (17:01.74).
For Franklinville/Ellicottville, Ben Wedvik captured 23rd (18:21.75), Kellen Hatch was 31st (19:15.73) and James McAuley 34th (19:25.61). Behind that trio, the Titans logged the best team finish, taking fourth place among nine teams with 133 points.
Cruz Clark led Olean and placed 25th overall in 18:35.22 while Daks Perry took 46th in 20:10.72. Denver Parsons led Salamanca by taking 36th in 19:33.91 while George Parsons notched 40th in 19:53.87. The Huskies nabbed sixth place 179 points while Otto-Eldred was seventh (181) and A-L ninth (217).
Henry Peterson, from City Honors, set a new course record and placed first individually with an impressive time of 15:39.39, winning the Bill Sprague Memorial Award for top male runner. North East claimed the team championship with 35 points, with Fredonia (57 points) and Eden (66) rounding out the top three.
ON THE GIRLS’ side, the Big 30 accounted for one podium finisher, four top 10 runners and six of the top 15 spots.
Olivia Harmony, of West Valley, placed third of 75 participants with a 5K time of 20:04.56, giving West Valley a pair of top-three finishers for the day, and Allegany-Limestone’s Abby Higgins captured fifth in 20:23.56.
Olean, meanwhile, landed three runners in the top 12, with May Eaton leading the Huskies and finishing seventh overall in 20:34.57, Kinley Belleisle finishing right on Eaton’s heels in 20:34.81 and Rachael Dulmas claiming 12th in 21:15.77.
Behind that trio, Olean finished fourth among eight teams with 96 points, placing behind third-place Frewsburg (88 points). Eden brought home the team title with 54 points while Springville was second with 81 points. Elke Melnick, of Springville, topped the field individually with a mark of 19:27.39, earning the Bill Sprague Memorial Award for top female runner.
Elsewhere from the area, A-L’s Lila Sheehy captured 13th (21:21.94), Salamanca’s Kaylin Lemon was 16th (21:52.33) and Franklinville/Ellicottville’s Eva Green was 24th in 22:40.19 as the Titans sat seventh in the team scoring (142 points).
VOLLEYBALL
Portville 3, Southwestern 0
FREDONIA — Ali Haynes racked up 18 kills, six digs and a pair of assists to key Portville to its 10th-consecutive sweep.
Addie Walker facilitated the offense with 27 assists, five aces, three digs and three kills as the Panthers took it, 25-10, 25-10, 25-11. Gaitley Maiolo notched eight kills, two aces and four digs and Marissa Carls posted four digs and five aces and she and Leigha Stives (2 aces) both chipped in two kills.
Mia Rhinehart contributed 13 digs for Portville (11-0), who have swept every opponent following a season-opening, come-from-behind, 3-2 triumph over St. Marys of Lancaster.
Southwestern fell to 5-8.
Ellicottville 3, Clymer 0
ELLICOTTVILLE — The Eagles won in straight sets (25-14, 25-14, 25-20) on Saturday. Riley Whitmer had 12 kills and 10 digs, Izzy Coburn and seven kills, five aces and 11 digs, and Ande Northrup added 16 assists for the Eagles.
Allegany-Limestone 3, Salamanca 1
SALAMANCA — The Gators defeated the Warriors in four sets (23-25, 25-6, 25-11, 25-14) on Monday, coming back from a set down. Serena Frederick had 21 kills and four digs for the Gators. Julia DeRose had 28 assists. Mia McCarthy had 11 digs. Makenzie Goldsmith had four kills and 10 digs.
Ellicottville 3, Randolph 0
Ellicottville beat Randolph in straight sets (25-17, 25-21, 25-13) on Monday. Ande Northrup had eight kills and 16 assists, while Izzy Coburn had seven kills and 11 digs.
GIRLS SOCCER
Portville 2, Jamestown 0
JAMESTOWN — Kiyah Mohr and Allie Bray scored for the Panthers on Monday. Bella Morales had six saves while keeping a clean sheet.
Panthers coach Michael Matz said he was impressed by his team’s defensive effort.
“I’m very impressed by our team defense,” Matz said. “The girls stay organized and communicate well.”
GIRLS TENNIS
Olean 5, Cassadaga Valley 0
SINCLAIRVILLE — On Friday, Olean girls tennis finished off its regular season with a sweep of Cassadaga Valley. Rachael Dulmus and Serenity Durphy won at first and second singles respectively. Braelyn Eaton and Simiran Chahal, Tiana Maine and Giana Baglione, and Elle Redding and Caidence Hutchinson won at the doubles positions.
BOYS SOCCER
Eden 1, Salamanca 0
Eden scored a winning goal in the final seconds of overtime to beat the Warriors on Monday. Cayden Lafferty had a highlight performance in goal for Salamanca, coming up with a penalty save.
