Former Buffalo Bills playoff hero set for free agent visit

Former Buffalo Bills wide receiver Gabe Davis is scheduled for a free agent visit with his former team this week, according to multiple reports.

Davis is also scheduled for a second free agent visit with the Pittsburgh Steelers this week.

The Bills worked out a pair of wide receivers on Monday with intentions of changing up some things at the position. The team decided to sign former Green Bay Packers seventh-round pick Grant Dubose on Tuesday ahead of the workout scheduled with Davis.

Davis spent last season in Jacksonville before the Jaguars released the 26-year-old on May 7. He struggled in his only season with the Jaguars, finishing with just 20 catches for 239 yards and two touchdowns.

The Bills opted to let Davis test free agency in the offseason of 2024. He signed a three-year, $39 million deal with the Jaguars but a torn meniscus ended his first season in November and cost him the rest of the year. The Jaguars had a big hit at receiver with rookie Brian Thomas Jr. in 2024. Jacksonville drafted receiver Travis Hunter in the first round of April’s draft, making Davis an expendable piece.

Buffalo has several questions at the wide receiver position. Veteran Curtis Samuel has missed most of the summer with a hamstring injury. He returned to practice this week but wasn’t able to play against the Chicago Bears on Sunday.

The Bills signed veteran Elijah Moore after the draft and he made an impact with a strong spring workout performance. But Moore hasn’t been as much of a factor since the start of training camp. He had a pair of drops against the Bears.

Third-year receiver Tyrell Shavers has been a summer standout for the Bills. He had 58 yards in the preseason opener against the Giants and has spent time working on the first-team offense with quarterback Josh Allen during training camp because of the team’s injuries at receiver.

Davis had plenty of success in his four-year run with the Bills. He set a playoff record with four touchdowns against the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional round playoff game in 2022. Davis had 27 touchdown receptions in four seasons with the Bills.
