City of Olean fire chief: 1 death in North Ninth St. fire
OLEAN — The City of Olean Fire Department reported that one person died as the result of a house fire Monday evening at 137 N. Ninth St.
Fire Chief Eric Maurouard reported that city firefighters responded at 5:31 p.m. to a report of a structure fire at the North Ninth Street address. Olean fire units arrived at 5:34 p.m. and found a two-story house with smoke coming from the second-floor windows.
The chief said one crew conducted a search for possible victims, while a second crew stretched a hose line and began to fight the fire, which was deemed under control at 6 p.m.
“Tragically, one civilian died as a result of the fire,” Maurouard stated. “One firefighter was treated for overexertion at the scene.”
No further information was available as of Monday night. The cause of the fire is under investigation, the chief said, adding that extra personnel were needed at the scene due to the heat index.
City firefighters were assisted by the Olean Police Department, New York State Police troopers, Trans Am Ambulance, firefighters from Allegany, Portville and the town of Olean as well as the state Office of Fire Prevention and Control.
Firefighters from Hinsdale and Westons Mills and Allegany EMS were on standby for the city during the fire.
