Joseph Ray ‘Dupe’ Duplechian, loving fiancé, father and son
OLEAN — Joseph Ray “Dupe” Duplechian, of Olean, passed away unexpectedly Friday (June 6, 2025) surrounded by his loving family, at Buffalo General Hospital.
He was born July 18, 1982, in Olean, to the late Albert Ray Duplechian and Celine Camp Penman, and was a beloved bonus son to Larry Penman.
Joe was a dedicated IT specialist at Olean City School District, having previously worked in various IT roles, including a significant tenure at Time Warner Cable/Adelphia. He was also the owner and operator of Olean PC Repair and Security Cameras since 2003. Joe made many friends during his time as a merchandiser for Sanzo Beverage, where his infectious smile and warm personality left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
An active member of his community, Joe volunteered for numerous charities and events, embodying the spirit of giving and service. He organized the Co-ed 4 a Cause and Old Timers Tournament, participated in the City Cup Softball, where he was honored with the “Mike Abdo Award,” and was known for his unique announcing voice that brought excitement to the City Cup.
For 14 years, he co-chaired the Rally in the Valley, a testament to his dedication to community engagement. He also served as an advisor for the Dennis Jones & Wayne Johnson Memorial Dice Run Scholarship, helping to support local youth in their educational pursuits. Joe’s commitment extended to assisting with the Michele Foss Bartholomew Softball Tournament, the Todd Briggs Softball Tournament and volunteering for the Chamber Clambake, Chamber Taste of Olean and Gus Macker in Olean.
His involvement in the Sunday Men’s Softball Committee and coaching Little League baseball, girls softball, indoor soccer, Olean soccer, and Peterson’s Landscaping softball team for six years showcased his passion for nurturing young talent and fostering teamwork.
In 2017, Joe even petitioned to run for Olean Mayor, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to improving his community and advocating for positive change.
A die-hard sports fan, Joe passionately supported the Buffalo Bills, Buffalo Sabres, Buffalo Bandits, Buffalo Bisons and the New York Yankees. He was also a season ticket holder for St. Bonaventure Basketball and the Olean Oilers. Joe enjoyed sharing his love for WWE Wrestling with Melissa and Mason, creating cherished memories filled with laughter and excitement.
The last three years that Joe and Melissa shared brought immense happiness and many new adventures into his life, providing treasured moments for all who were fortunate enough to be part of their journey together.
His son, Mason, shared, “He was an amazing friend and family member. He was such an amazing person that cared about everyone he knew. Joseph Ray Duplechian was an extraordinary person who always put others first.”
One of Joe’s final selfless acts was becoming an organ donor, helping four individuals with his heart, liver and both kidneys. A friend recalled Joe’s words: “When I am gone, I hope everyone knows I only tried to make this local area a little better and leave more smiles than frowns.” This sentiment perfectly encapsulates Joe’s generous spirit and his desire to uplift those around him.
Joe was known for his infectious laughter, his many witty comments, his ability to light up a room, and his unwavering support for friends and family. He had a unique talent for bringing people together, whether through sports, community events, or simply sharing a meal. His legacy of kindness, compassion and community service will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Joe was the loving fiancé, best friend and soulmate of Melissa Sullivan; and a devoted father to his children, Oliviah (Robyn) and Mason Duplechian; as well as his bonus children, Jazlynn and Jace Sullivan. He is survived by his siblings, Mindy (Derek) Wentling of Lebanon, Pa., Heather (Michael) Berube of Morganstown, Pa. and Chelsea (Brendan) Spear of Annapolis, Md.; along with several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father, Albert; and grandparents, Robert and Marion (Jean) Camp, Merlin Duplechian and Roberta White.
Family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday (June 17, 2025) and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at Guenther Funeral Home, Inc., 1303 E. State St., Olean. A private family burial will take place at 1:30 p.m. at St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to join in celebrating Joe’s life from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Olean American Legion, 307 E. State St., Olean.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joe’s name to the Olean SPCA, 2944 NY-16, Olean, NY 14760; or to any of the charities he supported.
Joe will be missed daily by his family and the entire community.
