Readers’ Turn to Write: The Olean Library is a treasure worth investing in
The Olean Public Library is so much more than a place to check out books — it’s a space where families grow, kids feel seen and learning comes to life. Walk through the doors and you’ll see it: children curled up with books, parents connecting and the joyful hum of a community that truly cares.
Kathy O’Malley knows every child’s name. She makes sure every kid feels welcome, safe and valued. And that’s not just kindness — it’s the foundation of something powerful. The library offers story times filled with laughter, hands-on crafts and even afternoons where children read to therapy dogs while snacking on “pupcorn.”
Yes — pupcorn! It’s magical.
Kids earn tokens to use in a special vending machine stocked with new free books to take home — helping them build their own libraries, one story at a time. Some days, they even stretch in the art gallery as they listen to stories and move their bodies.
For many children, this is one of the only places outside their homes where they feel completely safe and calm. The library provides comfort, routine and joy. There’s something deeply meaningful about being greeted by name, about walking into a space that says: You belong here.
But here’s the truth: the library is running out of room. Programs are often packed. Some children get turned away from story time simply because there isn’t enough space.
Now imagine this: an expanded, modern library — one where no child is ever turned away. Where young readers, teens, parents, artists and seniors all have room to explore, learn and connect. A place where creativity flows through maker spaces, author visits, family workshops and community events. A place that draws not only Olean families but visitors who want to experience the heart of this town.
The planned renovation includes bigger spaces for growing programs, group study rooms, a Maker Space, a cozy coffee station, more event-ready areas and improved comfort throughout — inside and out.
There’s another public hearing on June 14 at 11 a.m. Come and see the vision. It’s truly inspiring what the OPL and the architect have planned for this community.
Let’s build a future where everyone — young and old — feels inspired, connected and proud to call Olean home.
Vote YES for the library renovation — so we can grow, together.
