GVBC baseball falls short of sectional goal while Wellsville wins their title game

LIVONIA – The Genesee Valley-Belfast baseball team season came to an end in the Section 5 Class C2 title, losing 6-0 to No. 1 seed Kendall on Saturday.

The game was played over a two day period at two sites because of inclement weather. On Friday, GVBC got off to a rough start falling behind 4-0. Kendall’s first four batters had base hits and scored all four runs. The six hole hitter also doubled in the inning.

For the rest of the game Kendall would only get one more hit but score two more runs. (one unearned). It was a hole GVBC could not crawl out of. Senior Ryan Daciw started the game, giving up four hits and four runs in the first inning.

GVBC sophomore pitcher Ben Cater came on and in five innings he struck out four with three walks, two hits and one earned run, Mason Thomas also pitched one scoreless inning. “Both pitched well,” GVBC coach Dennis Miles said. “Gaining valuable experience for the future.”

“Kendall plays great defense and relies on their pitching to win games, which was spot on in their win,” Miles added. Kendall did not have an error while GVBC committed four.

GVBC’s hits went to Ben Cater, Derek Calanni, Ian MacKenzie, Evan Turybury, and Trent Hutchison.

GVBC will graduate seven seniors. They had an impressive year at 21-2, but for the second year in a row lost in the sectional finals.

    BASEBALL WELLSVILLE 4, LeROY 3

HORNELL – The Wellsville baseball team defeated LeRoy 4-3 on Sunday to win the Section 5 Class B title.

Karson Grover stole home for the winning run in the bottom of the sixth. He was also 2-3 with a double and two runs scored. Aiden Cowburn pitched a complete game for Wellsville, striking out 11 and giving up only five hits.

The team faces Section 6 champ Medina at 6 p.m. on Thursday at Dwyer Stadium in Batavia.

    SOFBTALL

WELLSVILLE 4, BATH-HAVERLING 2HONEOYE FALLS — The Wellsville softball team failed to defend their 2024 Class B state championship, losing 4-2 to Bath-Haverling on Saturday in a Section 5 crossover battle.

B-H had 12 hits to the Lions’ six, as B-H pitcher Kaili Witherell struck out 13 Wellsville batters with only a walk allowed.
