BRADFORD, Pa. — Sam Hyman thought he had done enough to take the top spot in the Penn-York Junior Golf League’s oldest boys division and end the Warren High School golf team’s run of firsts.

Playing in the second group in Division I (ages 16-18), the Pioneer junior-to-be shot a 74 Monday at Pine Acres Country Club. Hyman’s score bested the 76 carded in the first group by Warren’s Jake McCollough, who had already won twice on the tour and owned the lowest Penn-York scoring average through three events.

“I got him,” an excited Hyman said after glancing at the updated leaderboard. “I’m crossing my fingers now.”

It would’ve been enough, if not for a career round turned in by Joey Sidon minutes later.

Sidon, another Warren standout, fashioned a 1-under-par 71 to earn medalist honors. His previous low was an even-par 72 at Blueberry Hill in Russell, his home course.

“I’ve only played here like once or twice,” said the 16-year-old Sidon, who came in with an 84 Penn-York average. “I had a lot of nice wedge shots, especially on 18, I had it like 2 feet for a birdie. Just most of them, if I didn’t hit the green, I hit a nice wedge shot up close, and I think I hit like eight greens on the front out of nine. That was pretty good. I missed a few bad putts, but I came back.”

Sidon made Warren 4-for-4 in Penn-York stops. McCollough won at Elkdale and Wellsville country clubs, while Jack Reynolds, an Eisenhower student who played for Warren under a cooperative agreement, took home the title in Week 2 at The Pennhills Club.

“We play outside of this,” said Sidon, who work at Blueberry Hill with McCollough. “It feels nice to finally actually play under par for 18. I just played pretty steady all day. If I didn’t make bogey, I made pars or birdies.”

Hyman’s runner-up finish was the best of the year for the Penn-York rookie, who calls Holland Hills Country Club home.

Heather Haas’ winning score of 79 in girls Division I (ages 14-18) competition was even more impressive considering the Cuba-Rushford graduate overcame a triple-bogey on the par-4 first hole.

“I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh. Today might go not very good,’” said Haas, who qualified for the New York state championships this spring while playing for Olean High. “That’s normally something that happens at the end because I feel like I get a good round going and then end it badly (when) I get excited that I’m playing good.

“My driver … I (started to) hit it straighter and I wasn’t in the trees, and I putted pretty well.”

Smethport’s Connor Alfieri emerged victorious in a competitive field for his second Division II (ages 14-15) title in as many weeks, shooting an 82. Playing in the same group, Alfieri, Alex Diehl and two-time champion Matthew Lonto all shots 40s on the front nine, but Diehl and Lonto both finished with 86s. Ethan Beaver was the division runner-up with an 85.

“I was trying to keep my swing smooth and put it fairway and then green and then hopefully not three-putt,” Alfieri said of his decisive back nine. “You’ve got to focus a lot more. You can’t take any putt for granted.”

In Division III (ages 12-13), only one stroke separated the top three boys. A new champion was crowned in Kane’s Curtis Barner, whose 45 over nine holes edged previous winners Spencer Cornelius (Pine Acres) and Caden Salvaggio (Cardinal Hills).

Olivia Schott (Coudersport) was the girls Division III winner with a 78.

Allegany’s Ryan Lechner (St. Bonaventure) earned medalist honors in Division IV (11-and-under) for the third straight week, carding a nine-hole score of 43 from the modified tees.

Penn-York’s last stop is next Monday at Bartlett Country Club in Olean.
