BIG 30 basketball
CUBA - In the first game of the season last year, the Cuba-Rushford boys’ basketball team fell to Arkport 55-44.
This year’s season opener was almost the same story, as the Blue Jays beat the Rebels 54-45 in the Allegany County IAABO Tournament on Friday night. Cuba-Rushford led the majority of contest until the fourth quarter, including a six-point halftime lead.
“We kind of ran out of gas in the last four or five minutes,” said C-R head coach Gary Wight. “They went on a little bit of a run.”
C-R’s Caleb Young scored a game-high 19 points and Taylor Rose added 15 for the Rebels, which is currently riding an eight game losing streak dating back to last season.
“I was pleased overall,” added Wight. “We played hard. Our foul shooting didn’t help us any though, especially in the first half.” The Rebels went 6-of-15 from the foul line in the first two periods.
Arkport’s win was keyed by three players with double-digit scoring: Ethan Lewis had 16, Nick Smith had 12 and J.D. Lewis scored 10 points.
The Rebels (0-1) will face Franklinville in the tournament consolation game today at 5:15 p.m., and Arkport will meet Portville at 7:30 p.m. in the championship game.
