OLEAN - In their two Chautauqua Cattaraugus Division I regular season games this season, Olean High School got the better of Southwestern, but only by the slimmest of margins.

The Huskies won the first meeting at home, 2-0, and needed overtime to edge the Trojans, 2-1, when the two schools met in Lakewood.

On Tuesday, it was Southwestern getting the upper hand.

Tyler Haag’s goal on the sixth shootout penalty kick lifted 10th-seeded Southwestern into Friday’s quarterfinal round, courtesy of a 4-3 shootout decision after the two teams played to a scoreless tie after 110 minutes of regulation and overtime play.

Jason Carlson, Steve Warden and Josh Bogle also scored for Southwestern (8-5-4) in the shootout portion of the game.

Finding the net for No. 7 Olean High (7-7-3) were Louis Proto, Matt Witte and Brandon Jones.

“We had them,” said OHS coach Jim Charles. “In the shootout, we had two golden chances to win it in the first five shootout attempts.

“Our fourth shot hit the side post and their goalie made a great stop on our fifth shot. And our sixth penalty kick hit the crossbar as well.”

JD Olson recorded nine saves for the Huskies while Kevin Marsh stopped six shots for Southwestern in a game that saw each team register 19 shots.

“Heading into the playoffs, there were to teams I was leary about matching up against,” said Charles. “Falconer and Southwestern ... both of them finished the regular season strong.”

Allegany-Limestone 2, Eden 1

ALLEGANY - Fifth-seeded Allegany-Limestone (14-1-1) cashed in on a pair of corner kicks in its Section 6 Class B first-round win over No.12 Eden.

Zach Gelen scored on a pass from Andy Nelson on one corner kick and Blake Barker scored with assists coming from Lenny Watson and Brad Barker, also off a corner kick, as the Gators advanced to Friday’s quarterfinal round.

Kyle Trietley made nine saves for the Gators. Andrew Greiner made five saves for Eden (9-7-1).

SECTION 6, CLASS C

Salamanca 4, Cattaraugus-Little Valley 1

CATTARAUGUS - Brian Frank scored two goals and assisted on a third to key ninth-seeded Salamanca (3-14), which ended an 11-game losing streak with its  first-round win.

Mike Morris and Brennen Frank each scored, assists were credited to Evan Harrington, Cody James and Chris Goodman, and Mike DePonceau made 10 saves.

Logan Martin scored and Stephen Golembiewski and Anthony Fisher combined to record 14 saves for Cattaraugus-Little Valley (4-13).

“We scored the first goal and had the momemtum most of the first half,” said Cattaraugus-Little Valley coach P.J. Peterson. “Salamanca got a goal just before the half and everything snowballed on us after that. The momemtum shifted entirely in favor of them.”

DISTRICT 9 CLASS A

FIRST ROUND

Northern Potter 2, Curwensville 0

ULYSSES, Pa. - Dalton Grimes registered two goals, with assists from Andrew Morgan and Josh Knauer, to lead Northern Potter (12-5-2) to a first-round victory.

Phil Lehman had three saves to secure the shutout.

“It wasn’t a pretty win for us,” said NoPo coach Jeff Barber, “but we haven’t won in the first round in a few years, so anything’s better than a loss.

“Our defense held out tonight. They found themselves in the second half, when it counted.”

For Curwensville, Zach Kolesar stopped nine shots.

DuBois CC 1, Port Allegany 1

PORT ALLEGANY, Pa. - Dan Leroy’s goal in a 4-3 shootout was the deciding marker as DuBois CC (9-8-1) ousted Port Allegany from the Class A tournament.

During regulation play, Jon Binder scored on a pass from Ben Osani and Max Parana made eight saves for the Gators (10-7-2).

“We outplayed them in a lot of aspects,” said Port A coach Aaron Clark. “We just had a hard time getting one in the net. We outshot them 19-8 in regulation.”

SECTION 5, CLASS D

C.G. Finney 1, Whitesville 0

PERRY - Jake Sanchez scored and Craig Cole recorded 12 saves to key No.8 C.G. Finney (6-8-3) in a  first round win.

Trevor Jeffers stopped 14 shots for No. 9 Whitesville (7-10), which played without four starters who missed the game because of illness.

Mount Morris 2, Friendship 0
