BUFFALO - Sniper Thomas Vanek is out “weeks” after suffering an upper body injury during the Sabres’ 6-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday at HSBC Arena..

Vanek fell awkwardly and slid into the end boards after scoring his second goal of the game 12:26 into the second period. He didn’t return.

Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said Vanek was injured earlier in the game, however.

“It’s tough,” said Ruff, who provided few details about the injury. “But we’ve got extra players. Every team’s going to have to deal with injuries. … Every team’s going to miss key players along the way. I think we have enough depth.”

Vanek’s three goals lead the Sabres. The winger had 40 tallies last season, when a fractured jaw sidelined him nine games.
