PITTSBURGH - Notes from the Bills 17-0 preseason loss to the Steelers on Saturday night at Heinz Field:

- The Bills are now 2-6 against the Steelers in preseason, all-time, 0-4 in Pittsburgh.

- Nine Bills didn’t play due to various injuries including wide receivers Terrell Owens (toe) and James Hardy (leg), defensive end Aaron Schobel (elbow), tight end Derek Fine (hamstring) and offensive tackle Demetrius Bell. But, in a surprise, running back Fred Jackson (thumb) was active, but didn’t play.

Roscoe Parrish started for Owens and Ryan Denney for Schobel.

- Seven Steelers didn’t play including running back Willie Parker (hamstring) and wide receiver Santonio Holmes (back). They were replaced in the starting line-up by Rashard Mendenhall and Limas Sweed, respectively.

- The referee was Gene Steratore who officiates occasional St. Bonaventure basketball games during the winter.

- Bills’ first-round draft choice Aaron Maybin saw a decent amount of action in his first pre-season game and the defensive end from Penn State was credited with a sack of Steelers’ QB Ben Roethlisberger - though he appeared to share it with cornerback Reggie Corner - and had two tackles, one for a loss, plus a quarterback hurry.

“I watched him when he was in there,” said coach Dick Jauron. “I thought he looked quick ... fast off the ball. Quite frankly I was more pleased than I thought I’d be. I thought his legs would be heavy, but he came off the ball and got to the edge a couple of times.”

- James Farrior got Pittsburgh’s only takeaway, intercepting a terrible Trent Edwards pass and returning it 22 yards for a score. Later Farrior sacked Edwards. Later Steelers’ linebackers Arnold Harrison and Donovan Woods shared a sack of  Bills’ backup QB Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Of the interception, Edwards admitted, “James Farrior wasn’t where I expected him to be.”

- Buffalo’s only takeaway came when Mendenhall fumbled when hit by Bills’ defensive tackle Kyle Williams with outside linebacker Keith Ellison recovering.

- This game was such a downer for Buffalo, even the Bills’ normally stalwart special teams struggled. Punter Brian Moorman was solid, averaging almost 51 yards on seven boots.

But Buffalo was flagged three times on as many kicks to start the game: Jon Corto (illegal formation), Shawn Nelson (illegal block) and Nic Harris (ineligible downfield).

Then came the ultimate indignity, Rian Lindell’s 33-yard field goal attempt late in the fourth quarter was blocked by rookie cornerback Joe Burnett.

Oh yeah, Buffalo returned one punt for a yard (there was also a fair catch) while the Steelers averaged an impressive 14 yards on five returns.
