MELARO: Hinsdale ‘Wall of Fame’ grows by five names
The list of honorees on the Hinsdale Central School Athletic Wall of Fame grew by five earlier this month.
As part of the school’s Alumni Weekend festivities, Keith Linderman (Class of 1952), Claude ‘Tod’ Smith (’61), Barry Kent (’64), Edmund Glad (’74) and Mark Cornell (‘95) were recognized for their athletic contributions to HCS during their prep careers.
LINDERMAN was a five-sport standout for the Bobcats, competing in baseball, basketball, six-man football, track and volleyball.
Former Hinsdale Tom Colamonico was Linderman’s coach on all four teams.
In the fall of 1950, Linderman led Hinsdale to an undefeated season on the football field.
That same year, he was the leading scorer for the Bobcats on the basketball court and was a Cattaraugus County All-East All-Star selection.
In the spring of 1952, he was an All-County pick in track after winning the 1.5-mile county title.
He went on to serve two years in the U.S. Army and later settled in Franklinville and was employed by Motorola in Arcade for 30 years.
SMITH also participated in five sports while attending HCS – baseball, basketball, football, track and volleyball.
He led Hinsdale to the Class C league title in 1959 and ’61, earning both county All-Star and Times Herald Outstanding Player honors in 1961.
His school record of 43-11 in the shot put helped the Bobcats win the county’s Class C track championship in ’61.
On the football field, he scored four touchdowns and a pair of extra points in a win over Delevan-Machias.
After graduating from Hinsdale, Smith joined the Navy where he was a member of the U.S. Naval Fast-Pitch Softball Team four years (1961-65), helping the team win the Mediterranean Championship in 1962 and the following year.
He returned to Hinsdale and served as an assistant coach for the football team in the 1970s.
KENT competed in basketball, football and track while at Hinsdale.
He scored 60 points in a basketball game during his senior season.
Upon graduation, he continued to participate in basketball, serving as both player and coach for Hinsdale in a variety of adult recreation leagues and still plays even now in his late 60s.
A past member of the Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Department, Kent was the owner and president of the Maplehurst Livestock Market, Inc. and Kent’s Auction Service, Inc..
He is a life-long member of the Hinsdale American Legion.
GLAD was a four-sport star for the Bobcats, competing in baseball, basketball, football and track.
His junior year, he led Hinsdale to a runner-up finish to Clymer in the Section 6 Class D championship basketball game in Buffalo’s Memorial Auditorium.
He was the school’s leading free throw shooter in both his junior and senior years.
In football, he set a school record with seven receptions in a game and was selected to participate in the 1974 Big 30 All-Star game as a punter. However, he turned down the invitation to play baseball.
In 1973, he helped Hinsdale’s mile relay team set the school record.
After graduating from Hinsdale, Glad went on to earn a degree in economics from the University of Florida and has since worked for the U.S. Department of Labor, serving in the capacity of Network Administrator for the past 14 years.
He settled in Germantown, Md., where he has coached basketball, taking his teams to several regional and national tournaments.
CORNELL played baseball and basketball at HCS, finishing his high school career with 1,010 points, 452 rebounds, 222 steals and 188 assists.
He was among the top three-point shooters in the Big 30 his junior and senior years and helped the Bobcats earn playoff berths three straight years.
After graduating, he attended the Air Force Academy, where he competed in softball, bowling, basketball, golf, skiing, tennis and volleyball.
He received his A.A.S. in Fire Science from the University of Alaska-Anchorage and was deployed for duty in Kuwait, India, Italy, Japan, Thailand, Korea and Germany.
He was awarded the Expeditionary Medal for his tour of Kuwait during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
In 1999, he was named Firefighter of the Year while serving in Kunsan, Korea.
He has received medals for Expert Marksmanship, Korean Service and National Defense.
