Stoddard advances at NYS Men’s Amateur

All-Stars taking shape

GUILDERLAND - After shooting a 2-under-par 69 in the second round of medal play to qualify for mastch-play action in the 86th New York State Golf Association (NYSGA) Men’s Amateur Championship, St. Bonaventure sophomore-to-be Chris Stoddard kept up the momentum.

On Thursday, Stoddard claimed a pair of match-play victories against No. 9 seed J.P. Kircher (3-and-2) and No. 25 seed Bradley Roche (3-and-2), respectively, to advance to today’s quarterfinal round at Pine Haven Country Club.

Stoddard took on No. 17 seed Jeff Woiniewicz, who defeated the top-seeded player in the tournament and the winner would advance to this afternoon’s semifinals.

Stoddard, a Southwestern High School graduate representing Moon Brook Country Club in his hometown of Jamestown, was the No. 24 seed.

Two weeks ago, Stoddard qualified for the prestigious Porter Cup at Niagara Falls Country Club (NFCC). He will compete in the annual event from July 22-26 back at NFCC.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, Limestone’s Andy Frank, the former Jamestown Community College star, was ousted in the first round of match play.

Frank, who plays out of Bradford’s Pine Acres and is bound for Drexel University on a full scholarship, fell 3-and-1 to John Duthie.
