SMETHPORT, Pa. - Here’s a surprise.
The Smethport High School softball team opened its bid for a District 9 Class A title the same way it opened the regular season ... with a shutout victory.
Emma Hahn and Diana Phalon combined to strike out 17 batters and allow just two hits as the second-seeded Hubbers (18-1) blanked No. 10 Keystone, 8-0, on Wednesday.
Offensively, Taylor Burdick (2 RBI) and Alyssa Cunningham (double) collected two hits each and Amanda Vossler had three hits and an RBI for Smethport,. which will meet Rocky Grove (14-5) in a semifinal game next Tuesday.
Jenny Barrott struck out four batters, walked four and allowed 11 hits for Keystone (12-6).
“It was a tight game until the fifth inning,” said Smethport assistant coach Jim Kane. “Then we scored three runs and added four in the sixth. Emma and Diana pitched very well tonight.”
In the other semifinal, top-seeded Curwensville (18-1) will mee No. 4 Elk County Catholic (15-5). In yesterday’s quarterfinals, The Golden Tide shut out DuBois Central, 8-0, while the Crusaders won 3-1 over fifth-seeded Clarion.
The finals are scheduled for next Thursday at a site to be determined.
Rocky Grove 6, Northern Potter 5
ULYSSES, Pa. - Casey Martin (two runs, RBI) and Katie Smoker (two runs) each went 2-for-5 as third-seeded Northern Potter (15-5) ended its season with a nine-inning loss to No. 6 Rocky Grove (14-5).
CLASS AAA SEMI-FINALS
Punxsutawney 7, Bradford High 0
BRADFORD, Pa. - Angie Burke dominated for No. 3 Punxsutawney with seven strikeouts while scattering only three hits and a walk. Also for Punxsy (11-6), Allie Miller (double, triple) collected four hits and Sara Ruehle doubled.
Amber Lellock and Jenna Retts also chipped in with doubles.
Shelly Fuhrman struck out three, surrendered 11 hits and walked four in taking the loss for No. 2 Bradford High (13-7).
Brittany Harsen laced the only extra-base hit for the Owls with a double.
“Angie Burke was dominating as far as pitching went,” said Bradford High coach Nichole Spindler. “She pretty much shut us down all the way through five innings. We did not swing the bats well at all.
“They came out and hit every gap that we had on that field today.”
Punxsutawney will take on No. 1 Clearfield in the finals next Wednesday.
