Don't be confused by Salamanca's 'mysterious' ninth-place finish at the 11-team Gowanda Wrestling Tournament last Saturday.

The Warriors only took two wrestlers with Josh Becker winning the 152-pound title.

And he did enough to help Salamanca finish ahead of two other teams.

"Josh had missed the Oswego Duals and we wanted to get him some matches," explained Salamanca coach Mike Sebaaly. "With the point system the state uses for wild-card selections to the state tournament, we didn't want to take a chance Josh would fall short. He was an alternate last year and we wanted to make sure he had every opportunity to get as many points as he could."

SMETHPORT had three finalists in placing fifth at the North East Tournament last weekend. Tim Hubbard won the 125-pound title while Kevin Shunk (119) and Jon-Marc Burdick (135) placed second.

Burdick lost 5-2 in OT to Sharon's returning regional runner-up and eighth-place state finisher Jordan Moss. Hubbard outlasted Conneaut Lake's Rickey Garrett, 12-10, in the finals.

The Hubbers had 123 points to place behind Corry (166.5), Conneaut Lake (162), Seagertown (137.5) and North East (129.5). Kane placed eighth with 98.5 points with Matt Mix winning the 171-pound title and Ross Nicholson placing third at 189.

BOLIVAR-RICHBURG senior Matt Appleby boosted his stock in Section 5, where he's ranked second at 145 in Division II, by winning a Hornell Tournament title last weekend.

Appleby, who pinned Canisteo's Mark Ahearn in 2:47 in the finals, helped B-R to a fourth place finish with 132 points. Justin Cowell placed second at 125 for the Wolverines, who finished behind Bath-Haverling (186), Keshequa (152.5) and Canisteo-Greenwood (152). Wellsville (40 points) was 15th, Genesee Valley 19th (8 points) and Fillmore last with five points.

Also ranked for B-R are Justin Taylor, third at 215, James Barnum, fifth at 275, and Travis Dorvit, fifth at 160. Appleby is ranked only behind Marion's Josh Mayville.

TOPS IN D-9? In one of the most highly anticipated District 0 duals of the season, Redbank Valley (9-3) nipped Ridgway, 30-29, Tuesday night, coming back from a 29-18 deficit with pins in the final two matches at 160 and 171 Jonathan Brothers and Logan Shirey.

The win will likely vault the Bulldogs to the top seed in the upcoming District 9 team tournament. Deadline for entry is Friday.

Ridgway was coming off a 5-1 finish at the Lackawanna Duals where the Elkers lost only to Abington Heights, 39-28, in the finals. It was the fourth year in a row the two have met in the championship match

TOPS IN ERIE COUNTY? Cheektowaga rolled up 218 points to capture the 27-team ECIC Championships last weekend at East Aurora.
